What does inspiration mean to you and how would you use your platform in your future career to inspire others?
Inspiration is a powerful force that ignites passion, motivation, and determination within individuals. It is the spark that propels us to reach for our dreams, overcome challenges, and strive for excellence. To me, inspiration goes beyond personal achievements; it involves empowering and uplifting others to believe in their own potential and pursue their aspirations.
As an aspiring anesthesiologist and a black girl interested in STEM, I recognize the significance of representation and the impact it can have on inspiring young black girls to pursue careers in these fields. I firmly believe that by leveraging my platform in my future career, I can serve as a role model and advocate for diversity and inclusion in the medical profession.
Firstly, I would actively engage with local communities and educational institutions, particularly those in underserved areas, to share my journey and experiences. By participating in panel discussions, career fairs, and mentorship programs, I would aim to connect with young black girls who may not have encountered many professionals who look like them in the medical field. By sharing my story, the challenges I've overcome, and the successes I've achieved, I’d hope to instill a sense of possibility and resilience in these future women in STEM.
Secondly, I would utilize social media platforms to reach a wider audience and amplify my message of empowerment. Through videos and posts, I would provide insights into the world of anesthesiology, share advice for navigating the academic and professional journey, and share resources and opportunities for young black girls to explore STEM fields. By showcasing the diversity and brilliance within the medical community, I would inspire others to believe in their abilities and consider careers in healthcare.
Furthermore, as a BRACE Cadet for Broward County Schools, I am already taking steps to inspire and empower young girls in STEM. I am currently in the process of creating a podcast geared toward girls that focuses on exploring different careers in STEM. Through this podcast, I will feature interviews with diverse professionals in various STEM fields, highlighting their journeys, achievements, and the impact they have made. By showcasing these role models, I aim to break down barriers, challenge stereotypes, and encourage young girls to envision themselves in STEM careers.
In addition to my current efforts as a BRACE Cadet, my passion for mentoring and empowering others has been further nurtured through my involvement with Mentoring Tomorrow's Leaders (MTL). As a part of this program, I have had the opportunity to mentor at-risk youth, providing guidance and support to help them stay engaged in their education and overcome challenges. Inspired by this experience, I am motivated to continue making a difference by starting a mentoring program during my college or medical school years, with a specific focus on empowering young girls from underrepresented backgrounds in pursuing STEM careers. This program would aim to provide them with role models, educational resources, and personalized support to navigate their academic journeys and achieve their goals in STEM.
What are you currently doing to inspire those around you?
I am constantly seeking ways to inspire those around me through my actions and words. One of the key ways I do this is by leading by example. I believe that actions speak louder than words, so I strive to live my life in a way that aligns with my values and principles.
In my daily interactions, I make a conscious effort to treat others with kindness, empathy, and respect. I believe that small acts of kindness can have a ripple effect, and by being compassionate toward others, I hope to inspire them to do the same. Whether it's lending a listening ear to a friend in need or offering a helping hand to a stranger, I aim to show that simple gestures can make a difference in someone's life.
Furthermore, I am committed to personal growth and self-improvement, and I encourage those around me to do the same. I engage in continuous learning and development, whether through reading books, attending workshops, or seeking out new experiences. By sharing my journey of growth and the lessons I've learned, I hope to inspire others to embrace a mindset of lifelong learning and self-improvement.
I also strive to be a source of motivation and support for those who may be facing challenges or setbacks. Life can be tough at times, and it's important to remind others that they have the strength and resilience to overcome obstacles. Through my words of encouragement and belief in their abilities, I aim to empower others and instill a sense of confidence in their own capabilities.
Moreover, I am passionate about spreading positivity and optimism. In a world that can often be filled with negativity, I make it a point to focus on the good and highlight the possibilities. By sharing uplifting stories, inspiring quotes, and messages of hope, I strive to ignite a spark of positivity in the lives of those around me.
Lastly, I actively listen to others and strive to understand their perspectives and experiences. By practicing empathy and genuine curiosity, I create a safe space for people to express themselves and be heard. I believe that everyone has a unique story to tell, and by listening attentively and with an open mind, I want to inspire others to share their own stories and be confident in their voice.
What you would do with the scholarship award if you were to receive it?
If I were to receive the scholarship award, I would allocate the funds towards covering my tuition expenses, as it would alleviate the financial burden on my family and allow me to pursue my academic goals with peace of mind. Additionally, I would invest a portion of the scholarship in educational resources and materials to further enhance my learning experience. Lastly, I would consider giving back to the community by utilizing the scholarship to support and contribute to local organizations that have helped shaped me into who am I today as well as local initiatives that align with my values and passion for social impact.
