What does inspiration mean to you and how would you use your platform in your
future career to inspire others?
Inspiration is listening, seeing, dreaming, or hearing something and feeling compelled to do more. Inspiration can come in many forms and can mean different things to different people. To an artist inspiration may come in the of form a piece of trash; they may see a Snicker’s wrapper on the ground and feel encouraged to create a portrait using solely candy wrappers. To a musical genius inspiration may come from the sounds of rush hour traffic; they may feel enthusiasm to create a beat based off of these sounds. To a good samaritan inspiration may come in the form of seeing a homeless person sleeping on the side of the road; this may motivate them to open a homeless shelter in their neighborhood. Inspiration is listening to Andra Day’s hit song “Rise Up” and feeling emboldened to keep going no matter the obstacle. Inspiration is everywhere and it influences nearly all of our actions. Inspiration causes people to feel. Inspiration compels, encourages, enthusiates, motivates, and emboldens. As a future cosmetic dermatologist I plan to use my platform to inspire others by being the best me I can be. I plan on creating a non-profit for underrepresented minority girls to help them turn dreams into reality by connecting them with the right people and providing them the resources they need. This non-profit may inspire the girls I hope to serve to keep pursuing their dreams. Through the success of my non-profit organization others may also be inspired to follow and take part in my initiatives.
What are you currently doing to inspire those around you?
I am currently inspiring those around me by leading and taking action to serve my community. At the beginning of my junior year a club that I was an avid member of was heading towards its demise since I was the only member left because all of the of the members graduated. Instead of letting the club die, I decided to take on the position of President and revive it. I was responsible for recruiting more members, planning meetings, ordering t-shirts and searching for events to participate in. I am happy to say that Ladies of Unity, an all girls community service and mentorship club has been brought back to life due to my inability to sit back and do nothing. When I am presented with a dead situation or one that needs improvement, I take the initiative to make it better. A classmate of mine saw that I was member of National Honor Society a few weeks ago and said, “that’s a dead club” I told him that I am running for President and plan to revive it. I was elected president and cannot wait to make improvements. I have many projects that I would like to take on to the enrich the community around me but I can only do so much at a time. I am currently working on my Girl Scout Gold Award where I am planning the installation of a food pantry at a local university or my high school due to the food insecurities that run rampant among those in my neighborhood. I know that I am inspiring others because when I let others know of the things I am doing to make a change they are often times eager and feel compelled to make a change for the better with me.
What you would do with the scholarship award if you were to receive it?
If awarded the Desire to Inspire Scholarship I will use part of it to continue my efforts towards the installation of my food pantry and I will save the rest of it to aid me in the college application process and use whatever is left to go towards whatever I’d need in college.
