Where are you currently at in your career path and why did you decide to pursue this career path?
I am currently a second-year medical student at McGovern Medical School in Houston, Texas. Medicine has always been my passion for as long as I can remember, and I have never been able to see myself in any other field. Personal experiences with sick family members and my own hospitalization at an early age really solidified my passion and desire to become a physician.
If you could go back and have a chat with your naïve college freshman self, what would you tell her?
Baby gehl, it will all be worth it.
What advice would you give to someone looking to pursue a similar path as yours?
- Look for mentors that you can relate to.
- Never let anyone discourage you from chasing your dreams no matter how “right” they seem. (academic advisors, family, and friends included)
- “Don’t put off until tomorrow what you can do today.”
What is a major challenge you have had to overcome and how did you do so?
Being my own worst critic – often times, we can be the meanest, most cruel and demeaning people to ourselves. We have to get in the practice of speaking life and prosperity and victory over ourselves in every situation. Our words carry weight!
What advice would you give to someone getting ready to start their application process to medical schools?
Visit the Black Girl, White Coat website and/or YouTube channel for all my application tips!
Did you take some time off before medical school? If so, what did you do during that time?
During my year off between Baylor and McGovern, I took the time out to travel overseas to different countries, and I worked as a scribe in an Emergency Department at Memorial Hermann.
What is it like attending school in your city?
I was born and raised in Houston, so I was well aware of the amazing medical center before applying to med school. There’s no beating what we have here, so when the opportunity to attend McGovern came about, I couldn’t resist. Houston is full of opportunity and excitement for every healthcare professional.
