Where are you currently at in your career path and why did you decide to pursue this career path?
I am currently a first-year medical student working towards becoming an Ophthalmologist. As someone who is one step away from being legally blind, my vision has caused many challenging and embarrassing moments throughout my life. These moments have made me truly fascinated with the eye and has given me the drive to want to improve the way people see the world, both literally and figuratively.
If you could go back and have a chat with your naïve college freshman self, what would you tell her?
I would tell her to believe in herself! In my life, I've had so many naysayers tell me what I could and could not accomplish. Often times, it caused me to doubt myself and my abilities. In fact, there were times where I wasn't sure if I could get into medical school on my first try. But now that I've been blessed to have accomplished so much and prove so many people wrong, I've realized that there was no reason to doubt myself in the first place.
What is your favorite thing about your medical school?
The family atmosphere. Although my classes have been mostly virtual due to the pandemic, I have already been able to make friends that I know will last a lifetime. Having that support system is something I will forever be grateful for.
What advice would you give to someone getting ready to start their application process to medical schools?
I often tell people who ask me this question to not obsess so much on MCAT or standardized test scores, but to instead focus on personal development and gaining experiences that will prepare you for the career path that you want to pursue. Test scores are just numbers; but your personal statement and unique experiences are what truly help you stand out among other candidates.
What do you like to do for fun?
I love traveling, exercising, spending time with friends and family, and trying out new restaurants (especially brunch places). I also love anything that brings an adrenaline rush like haunted houses and skydiving.
What do you do to get through the stressful nature of medical school?
I always make sure to take time for myself. Whether it's something as simple as calling friends or family, trying out new skincare routines, or working out, I always make sure that I take time to relax and breathe.
Thank you for taking the time to share some of your experiences and words of wisdom with us Jessica! We really appreciate it, and we wish you well as you continue to power through medical school and beyond!
